Don’t worry if you don’t think you have the perfect idea to trump them all, give it a GO! You’ve got to be in it to win it right?!
This event will be held in October and is the most anticipated event in the Scholars Leaders Series calendar. This year it’s getting a re-design and will be hosted at BloomLab.
The event is a bit like TEDX talks, where we will have 4 UWA Fogarty Scholars and/or Alumni presenting on their passions, achievements or a personal initiative they’ve established within the community.
We’ve got some speakers in mind but please get in touch if you know of a Scholar or Alumni who’d be great to inspire us all!
What do Scholars think about past events?
In May, Robin McClellan, CEO of Leadership Western Australia, hosted a workshop to help Scholars answer the question: “As a leader, how well do you know yourself?”
“One of the main things that Robin presented was the concept of the ‘Elevator Speech’ – a short, succinct summary about yourself that could, in theory, be delivered in the length of a single elevator ride. She encouraged us to focus on our goals and passions, with the aim of being able to tell the listener something to set us apart from the crowd.
By getting us to practice our own ‘Elevator Speeches,’ Robin highlighted that we needed to have a thorough understanding of ourselves to be able to present our ideas to others.
Some of the other advice given by Robin related to the importance of appearance – the importance of first impressions, and some tips and tricks for interviews. This advice, along with her words on leadership and knowing ourselves, will undoubtedly prove to
be useful to many scholars in the years to come.”
“The workshop was incredibly thought provoking, encouraging us to think about what we really want to achieve as emerging leaders. To finish the workshop, we were given time to develop our own elevator pitches, short presentations in which we say who we are and what we do in a clear, concise and compelling format that could inspire potential employers, collaborators or sponsors.”
